| Reader, supposed myself standing before the judgment seat of Christ! a necessary, a prudent supposition: it ought to be a very frequent one. The Judge demands, "What hath thou to plead for a portion in the blessedness of the righteousness?" The plea must be, "O my glorious Judge, thou hast been my sacrifice. O thou Judge of all the earth, permit dust and ashes to say, my righteousness is on the bench. Surely, in the Lord have I righteousness. O my Savior, I have received it, I have secured it on thy own gracious offer of it." The Judge proceeds: "But what hath valve to plead that thy faith should not be rejected as the faith of the hypocrite?" Here the plea must be, "O Lord, my faith was not a work. |

Essays to do Good; addressed to all Christians whether in public or private capacities, is a response to a world of second generation Puritans who had lost the grace and mercy of Christ, whom they sought, and was left only with the heart to impose strict punishments on any law violation. "Essays to do Good;" was a maxim with Mather “that the power and opportunity to do good, not only gives a right to the doing of it, but makes the doing of it a duty.”
These essays were first published by cotton Mather in 1710. They offer a humble religious character to magistrates, ministers, physicians, and the general public. |
